Budokai Tournament scenario info and feedback
Hey guys, as people seem pretty positive and enthusiastic this thread was created for your thoughts, requests, ideas and opinions. feedback on the upcoming budokai tournament scenario I suggested for the mainline world of darkness campaign.
For anyone who missed it, the basic premise is a slightly more light hearted non-mainline story in the world of darkness where our characters will participate in a budokai tournament. This is a combat based ladder style tournament that will consist of a series of 1 on 1 battles in a small arena. The scenario relies on the majority of characters entering the tournament however it will be completely optional as there will be sub-plots, NPCs and secrets waiting to be discovered, whether you choose to enter or not there will be opportunities to to explore and interact with these elements between rounds, and both before and after the tournament has finished.
The plot is a closely guarded secret, leaks punishable by death! But now I'll give you my basic plans and you can give feedback and ideas for how you want tournament/ring game play to work out.
The scenario will take place in a persistent relatively unchanging place, obviously with the exception of any character/dragon Geo-landscaping reconstruction(think tutorial-ville). This will consist of the main arena in the centre, with viewing auditorium complete with crowd. Surrounded buy bars, shops, contestant training and resting facilities.
For story reasons regular gold will not be accepted as currency, each player will be given 10 units of money (also hidden for story purposes which they can use to buy from a shop, wager in their own tournament matches, and gamble and bet on other peoples matches. This is laid out on purpose as there will literally be a cap to how much money is in the scenario. If you want to buy the better equipment from the shop in the limited time we play this scenario, your going to have to have too acquire it through combat, betting, trade (or other means) and buy it before its too late. This money will not be converted into gold or reimbursed when we return to the regular WoD scenario so you'll have to make the call or when an how you want to spend your limited resource or risk loosing it.
There maybe other opportunities to collect units of currency but they will depend on story and ultimately decisions you guys make.
So here is the hard bit, 1 vs 1 combat the question is how do you guys want to handle it, if we follow the standard turn based action I fear it will take forever just to get through one fight, so what I propose is a number of phases
Phase 1 – pre combat
next fight is announced – this gives peoples opportunity to bet on a match, wager currency if your a contestant where ever you are, you must decide if your going too the fight/or not?
Phase 2 combat – fight begins, other than dialogue, cheer-leading/ detracting etc. unless you directly next to the arena or in the arena, or able to affect the events is the arena you cannot move, talk or act until the completion of the round.
Phase 3 post combat – If need be we can now recount anything that was going on during the round, after which there will be downtime between battle for exploration. Adventuring whatever, return to phase 1
If no playable characters are not involved in combat, they can continue doing whatever they want and GM will simply roll. And announce out comes. This will change if characters wish to spectate there potential opponents. I'm suggesting this in the interest of time and to keep the flow going, but if you feel there is a better way to go about it, I'm all ears.
Try to interact with the crowd and win them over, this can be achieved with catchphrases, fighting poses and actions in combat, having the crowd on your side may give you extra dice rolls or reduced how many your opponents get.
Another thing we have to consider is the rules of combat, I’m quite happy to give you guys free reign over this section, the only caveat being I will insist that ring-outs are included.
Other than that go wild, things to consider
weapons allowed?
Magic/abilities allowed?
Victory conditions?
Bare in mind you might be drawn to fight each other .

Sounds great to me. Though I can't see my character getting involved in a tournament due to his notoriety and shyness, also he will be pretty useless in a 1 on 1 scenario since he can only use a bow.
You did mention there might be a few side missions aside from the combat, so I'll probably take part in those.

Re: Budokai Tournament scenario info and feedback
Sounds good ,only issue I see is 1v1 can be quite boring for players watching ( but you seem to have covered that with quick combat and ring outs, team battles would be cool if possible / story allowed as that means we could have half the group on one team half on another or all same team so everyone is involved during that fight. ( 1v1s still happen though or it wouldn't be a budokai tournament ) I like the coins idea. Weapons should be allowed as some of us are no good in barehand fighting , magic and weird skills is debatable, of course if they can't see said skill working then how do they know its been used I am ok with magic being used but both me and Ryan have other combat skills to compensate if we can't use magic ( I am classifying my shape shifting as magic here)
Remember all that silver weapons cause aggravated damage to me and will force me to roll against raging out. Also unless research is done on my Chars background the fighters would not know he's a shifter unless magic is usable in tournament then they would know quite quick

Its entirely up to you dude, but I can say despite your notoriety and wanted status for plot the reasons this shouldn't be a problem, you can always wear a mask and come up with a pseudonym.
the combat rules will enlarge be decided by you guys, but you can always get lucky rolls :p
There will be handy equpiment and resources in the shop, the easiest way to acquire currencey is battle, I'll try to make it as tempting as possible but its your decision and as GM it will be my job to make sure you have other concerns if thats how you want to play it.

Re: Budokai Tournament scenario info and feedback
First to deal 7 bashing/lethal damage wins? I don't think anyone wants to die or be horribly mamed for the rest of their characters existence
Also, ringouts are included? Telekinetic blows here I come!

Re: Budokai Tournament scenario info and feedback
I do believe TK blows are 1 yard (thus square) per success but I havnt read it since I glimpsed it back in wolves , and since players have defence subtracted from your dice pool I think it will be quite balanced tbh

Also have 1v1 till K.O or ring out , lethal won't kill unless you bleed to death , but I would assume the people holding the tournament would have healers and potions on standby so only agrivated dmg would kill.

I've just had another idea that could be quite amusing. You'll have to wait and see what it is though!
A new Challenger approching.
Have made a person who will compeate as i can't see echo bothering with such a pointless endever (his words not mine!). They could be just at the place, could become part of the main story depending on views, dunno what the rules regarding 2 characters is.

I wouldn't worry about using another character, pretty much anyone present at the start of the adventure will be swept up in it, and it won't be so easy to leave. the characters won't be entering for fun, but for the purpose of completing a goal, and there will be an ongoing mystery that he's probaby best suited to investigating if you didn't want to enter him.
